Google Business Profile and AI recommendations

Page updated

Your Google Business Profile is the listing Google shows for your business: name, address, hours, phone, website, reviews. AI engines answer local questions from what they find on the web, and an answer can state your hours or address correctly, wrongly, or not at all. Citation checks both sides: whether the engines recommend you, and whether the facts they state match your Google listing. It does not claim that a better profile will get you recommended more.

Two different things

Your Google Business Profile is what Google holds about your business and shows in Search and Maps. Google says this about its local results:

“Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results.”
Google Business Profile Help: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, checked on 2026-10-30.

That is about Google's local search results, not AI answers. An AI answer is text an engine writes when someone asks a question. With web search or grounding on, it draws on pages it finds at that moment. That is why Citation labels each engine by its method, such as Gemini (Google Search grounding).

What a Citation audit checks against your listing

  1. Facts: up to five facts the answers state about you, each compared with your Google listing: hours, phone, address, kind of business and website. A wrong fact becomes a gap, with the engine's own words as evidence.
  2. Missing fields: if your listing has no website or no neighborhood, the report says so.
  3. Reviews against competitors: if a nearby competitor has at least twice your review count, or a rating at least 0.3 stars higher, the report shows the comparison.
  4. Sources: which websites the engines cited when they answered, and whether your own site was among them.

How facts are graded.

What this page does not claim

Citation records what the engines said, not why they said it. No audit shows that a complete profile, more reviews or a higher rating causes a recommendation, so this page does not say it does. What an audit can show is where an answer gets your facts wrong, and which competitors are named instead of you.
